Vince Haines, proprietor of NOR Test and Tagging services, has been a registered electrician for more than 35 years.

He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in fault finding and repair in an extensive range of electrical equipment both domestic and commercial.

Vince is able to offer additional services to his clients to undertake diagnosis and fault finding to appliances that have failed in operation or failed one of the tests during the Test and Tag process. E.g. Physical damage noted, failed earthing, polarity etc.

In these circumstances, where other Test and Tag companies/franchisees can only remove the equipment from service, Vince as a registered electrician is able to undertake diagnosis and repairs where possible, practical and economical.

Although we are becoming more and more a “throw away” society, there are still many occasions where it is cost effective to repair electrical appliances/equipment.

Some appliance issues can be due to issues such as faulty pins on plugs, supply cords etc that have suffered impact damage and similar. In these situations a replacement plug and/or cordset, followed by a Test and Tag and the appliance can be returned to service.

Vince is happy to discuss specific items of equipment as he appreciates the various considerations that many items of equipment have in a workplace including: Equipment ROI, Downtime, Lost Productivity etc.

Here are some photos of electrical items recently “discovered”.

This Lampholder, from a “Standard Lamp”, has a switch the user reaches up under the lampshade to turn on / off. Whilst ok from one side, it can be seen how the other side is damaged and cracked and could prove hazardous to someone operating the switch should their finger(s) touch the “live” terminals.

It’s a good joint under the tape I was told…..under the tape was heat shrink..which is good…but under the “heat shrink” the wires of the two cables were just twisted together!!

A good joint requires to be soldered or “crimped”..better still is to re terminate the power lead into the appliance or plug.

Visual Inspections are the first part of any Test and Tagging activity.

Just because “it works” doesn’t mean it’s ok!!

Why do pets like to chew on cables???

This is not a cordless motor…just a motor missing the lead after an enthusiastic puppy had a chew!!

Fortunately, the lead was able to be re-terminated resulting in an operational electric lift chair and a very happy client.

In this “throw away” age, it is pleasing to be able to return a ceiling light / fan unit to full operation.

The fan itself was in good condition with the main fault being the internal wiring for the lighting becoming brittle after many years of high wattage incandescent lamp heat deteriorating the wiring.

The cracked lamp-holder was replaced, new wiring installed with heat resistant sleeving also.

A quick clean of the lamp cover and fan blades followed by reinstallation and “voila”..a very happy client.

When undertaking Test and tagging, the first step is the visual inspection.

Even with “new” items this is always an important step.

A recent inspection highlighted this when I discovered a brand new mixer with an “illegal” plug fitted!!.

Yes the 3 Pin plug had “un insulated pins”

This has been a requirement on new equipment sold since 1st April 2005…YES 2005!!!

The client was surprised but again, this is why regular Test and Tagging” is an important part of business models
