Test and Tagging is the process used to check that, portable mains powered, equipment (appliances) in a workplace are safe to operate.
INSPECT
The visual inspection is where many faults and issues are discovered.
Due to the nature of portable appliance, leads and plugs are often found to have suffered damage such as cracked/broken plugs, damaged pins, cable securing points failing and also leads can be damaged.
Should there be any defect highlighted in the visual inspection the equipment should be removed from service with a “Do Not Use” Tag until repairs/remedial works are undertaken.

TEST
Testing varies depending on Class of equipment. For example
- Earth Continuity Testing (Class 1)
- Insulation Testing
- Current Leakage Testing.
- Polarity Testing
TAG
Upon successful testing a tag is fitted to the equipment to advise that it has passed the Testing process.
The Tags fitted are generally colour coded to provide a quick visual indication of when items were tested / due to be re tested.
Whilst not mandated, especially in the Construction / Demolition Industry, standard colour codes are universally accepted as follows:
- Red — December to February
- Green — March to May
- Blue — June to August
- Yellow — September to November
LOG
It is important to have documentation of the tagging process. i.e.
- Details of the equipment.
- Test/Retest date.
- Details of person undertaking the testing process.
